Writing

Third grade is a fantastic year for leaping forward as writers! At Park, our program develops skillful, confident writers who love to write and play with words. Kids are shown strategies and examples (mentor texts) for a variety of writing types. We write and share stories (both fiction and personal narrative), informative/explanatory pieces, and opinion pieces for an audience of our peers, sharing aloud in our beloved Author’s Chair. After sharing, students receive three positive comments from their peers. Students are supported through one on one conferences with the teacher and by their peers through partner brainstorming and feedback.

I encourage students to open themselves up to the "dreaming-doodling part of the brain" as my poetry teacher friend Karen Benke refers to it. We experiment with colorful and expressive language, using our favorite authors as inspiration. In this way, we learn to keep our audience in mind as writers, while also developing our own sense of voice as writers.
