Meet Mr. M.

I live in Tam Valley with my wife, Jennie.

I enjoy spending time with family and friends, biking, hiking, playing pickleball, reading, writing, and rooting for the Giants and Warriors. I speak some Italian and have an affinity for all things Italian, especially food, having been raised with a special connection to my Sicilian born Grandmother.

I grew up in the formerly sleepy, small town of Pacific Palisades (one beach town north of Santa Monica), the youngest of six kids. My dad loved his career as the beloved town pediatrician for 40 years. He always found great fulfillment in caring for his patients with a cheerful and calm demeanor. I aspire to bring that same level of care and commitment to my students.

I had a fair amount of social anxiety as a small child and was able to be coached through these challenges as I progressed through grade school.  I fondly remember my third grade teacher, Miss Lalor. She was so gentle and kind. I remember the joy of writing stories and making up skits that year. I made great friends that year and still hang out with two of them who happen to live in Mill Valley.

I've learned a lot about child development and pedagogy through my education and experience. However, the most important lessons I learned about teaching were from kind role models over the years like my parents and siblings, teachers, coaches and mentors along the way. I discovered that high expectations and gentle guidance are the keys to the teacher-student relationship.

I love teaching at Park School, where I have spent my entire career ever since student teaching with legendary third grade teacher, Mrs. Uyeda. For much of my career, I have had the good fortune to work with teaching partner, Julie Herrera, who continues to inspire and challenge me and crack me up. Park School is a wonderful place for teachers and students. Each day is full of joy, discovery, and laughter. It is gratifying for me to see former students and parents around Mill Valley and hear about all the wonderful things they are up to. They will always be part of the Room 4 family.
